DESCRIPTION

This series specification describes two bindery worker classes which under close supervision at the lower level and under general supervision at the higher level, learn the fundamentals of bindery work, perform a variety of tasks, including the operation of all machines and equipment in the Bindery Section of the Reprographics Division; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES Bindery Worker Trainee is an apprentice position designed to give a comprehensive training program in bindery work. At the completion of the training program, Bindery Worker Trainees are expected to qualify for the journey-level position of Bindery Worker. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
|
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Operates bindery equipment including a power drill for drilling multiple holes of variable sizes and positioning, power stitcher, jogger, multi-station collator power cutter, multi-station mail inserter, and other equipment as required. 2. Performs hand collating of short-run projects, checking correct sequence of order, stapling, power stitching, or binding. 3. Assembles printed forms into final order and places in padding racks in precise stacks, applies padding compound to stacks, and, when dry, splits and places in mobile racks for shipment to shipping department. 4. Handles special hand inserting and merging of gathered sets as required. 5. Keeps work area and time records of all chargeable activities. 6. Keeps accurate time records of all chargeable activities. 7. Operates the Addressograph machine, printing addresses on envelopes, mailing wrappers and folders. 8. Maintains mailing lists in current order. 9. Maintains and makes minor repairs to equipment. 10. Performs hand bindery operations such as binds and cloth strips multi-page books; hand folds, scores and glues special projects; merges pre-gathered book sections into proper sequence; operates hand numbering machines; inserts chipboard dividers and performs all padding functions including carbonless paper. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Either I Successful completion of a course in bindery work at a high school or community college level. Or II Experience: The equivalent of six months of experience at a trainee level in general bindery work. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |

Knowledge of: · Current bindery methods and commonly used bindery equipment. Abilities: · Using bindery tools and equipment. · Keeping accurate time records. · Inspecting bindery work processed for correctness of sequence, conformity to the Printing Requisition, quantity and final delivery requirements. · Interpreting oral and written instructions. · Correctly identifying possible machine malfunctions and performing minor repairs. |
