DESCRIPTION

Under direction, to function in a lead capacity over the Bindery Section of Reprographics; to operate power paper cutter, folding machine, paper drill, stitcher, collators, joggers and related bindery equipment.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES Senior Bindery Worker is a one-position class in the Reprographics Division of the General Services Agency. In this position, the incumbent is required to function as a lead worker and to operate diversified equipment relative to all general bindery needs, and perform related work, as required. It is distinguished from Bindery Worker by lead responsibilities. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
|
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Assigns and reviews the work of Bindery Workers and Bindery Worker Trainees; trains assigned employees in all facets of the work of the section. 2. Performs all paper-cutting requirements of the Division, including cutting of pre-press paper stock from the original parent size sheet down to press-size, using the most economical and advantageous cuts per paper size. 3. Finish cuts and trims printed materials, bound books, reports, folders, forms, legal documents, etc. 4. Operates folding machine; sets up folder for all standard folding configurations; controls close folding registration on all paper stocks. 5. Sets up and operates power paper drill when required for custom drilling. 6. Operates power collators, stitchers, joggers and multi-station inserter. 7. Maintains time records for each job. 8. Maintains and makes minor repairs to equipment. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I
The equivalent of one year of experience as a Bindery Worker in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.) Or II The equivalent of one year of experience as a journey-level bookbinder. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Knowledge of: • Types of paper (basic sizes and weights). • Printing terms. • Current bindery methods and commonly used bindery equipment. • Principles of supervision. Ability to: • Use small hand tools--wrenches, bookbinding knives, measures, etc. • Work independently. • Identify machine malfunctions and make minor repairs to equipment. • Read requisitions and follow oral and written instructions. • Assign and review the work of others. • Recommend new methods to improve productivity. • Keep accurate records. • Inspect bindery work for quality control. |
