DESCRIPTION

DEFINITION
Under general supervision, to perform journey-level electrical work; to install, maintain, repair, and alter a variety of indoor building and outdoor electrical systems, machinery and equipment; and to perform related work as required.


DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

These positions are located in the General Services Agency Building Maintenance Department and report to a Supervisor, Buildings and Plant Maintenance. Electricians perform journey-level electrical work in buildings and adjoining outdoor spaces having a great variety of electrical equipment. This class is distinguished from Supervisor, Buildings and Plant Maintenance in that the latter is supervisory in nature and has responsibility for the operation, maintenance, installation and repair of building and plant equipment for a group of County buildings.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Constructs, installs, maintains, tests, troubleshoots, cleans and repairs electrical distribution systems and devices under 600 volts, such as indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures, transformers, programmable logical controls (PLC), motors, motor controls, process controls, life safety systems, electronic controls, relays, regulators, branch circuit breakers, main distribution circuit breakers, pneumatic tube systems data communications lines, electrical wiring in workstation partitions, and other related electrical equipment.

2. Lays out electrical installations of various types, estimates labor and material costs, and procures electrical equipment.

3. Cuts, bends and installs rigid conduit, electrical metallic tubing (EMT), and pulls current carrying conductors.

4. Cleans, repairs and maintains electrical equipment associated with refrigeration and cooling units, heating systems and stand-by generators.

5. May be required to switch, test and work in close proximity to high voltage electrical systems over 600 volts.

6. Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and programs low voltage systems, including security door systems, building automation systems, irrigation control systems, and fire alarm systems.

7. Climbs ladders and operates various lifts to perform electrical installations and maintenance.

8. Oversees and generates punch lists for work completed by external contractors.

9. Develops written procedures for maintaining and switching electrical systems and components.

10. Maintains basic records of work performed and time allocated.

11. May train, instruct, and/or direct the work of other maintenance personnel as directed.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I

Education and Training:
Completion of an accredited apprenticeship in the electrician's trade,

And

Experience:
The equivalent of two (2) years of full-time journey-level experience as an electrician.

Or II

A combination of education or training in the electronic or electrical trade plus full-time journey-level electrician experience totaling six years.

License:
Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

Special Requirements:

Must be able to safely lift and carry tools and equipment weighing up to 60 pounds.
Must be able and willing to work outside in all types of weather conditions.
Must be able to climb and work from ladders, aerial lifts, and/or scaffolding.
Must be able and willing to work in confined areas.
Must be able to use a respirator.
Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.


KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• The standard practices, procedures, methods, tools, materials, equipment, machines and safety requirements used in the electrical trade.
• Electrical building construction, including planning, layout, blueprint reading and estimating the cost of labor and materials.
• The principles of electricity.
• Safety practices in the electrical field.
• Electronics.
• Computers.

Ability to:

• Plan and install electrical circuits.
• Repair electrical appliances and office equipment.
• Perform electrical work in a safe manner following federal, state, county and departmental safety procedures and requirements.
• Interpret and apply the National Electrical Code and the California Electrical Safety Orders.
• Read and interpret blueprints.
• Keep simple paper and electronic records.
• Use basic computer software, i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook.
