DESCRIPTION

Under direction, to assign and supervise the work of journey-level painters and helpers in painting building interiors and exteriors, furniture, and other articles; to personally perform the work of a journey-level painter; and to do related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Receives work orders; orders materials not in stock; prepares special paints or stains required; assigns work to journey level and helpers; inspects work in process or upon completion.
2. Keeps time and progress records on work performed.
3. Maintains an inventory of equipment and supplies and requisitions material as needed.
4. As assigned, estimates cost, time, and materials required for specific jobs and inspects work let out on contract for compliance with specifications.
5. Personally performs the work required of a journey-level painter.
6. Supervises the work of journey-level painters.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I

The equivalent of two years of experience as a Painter in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

Or II
Education and Training:

Completion of an accredited apprenticeship in the painter's trade,

And
Experience:

The equivalent of five years’ full-time experience as a journey-level painter.

License:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• Modern methods, tools, and equipment used in the painting trade, including color matching and paper hanging.
• Safety practices. including the rigging and use of scaffolds.

Ability to:

• Instruct and supervise the work of journey-level painters and helpers.
• Work harmoniously with operating personnel in scheduling and completing painting jobs.
• Estimate the time and materials needed to complete work assignments.
• Use skillfully the tools and equipment of the painter's trade.
• Maintain records.
