Under direction, to perform the most complex projects involving the construction, maintenance, testing, and repairing of Radio Communications equipment in the Radio Services Group of the Information Technology Department; to function as a supervisor on certain projects; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES Senior Telecommunications Technicians are at a higher level than the journey class of Telecommunications Technician. Incumbents personally handle the more complex communication problems and advise the Telecommunications Technicians and Trainees on difficult work problems. They also may function as a supervisor over teams of Telecommunications Technicians, Trainees or Telecommunications Equipment Installers. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Performs the most complex projects involving the construction, maintenance, testing and repair of analog and digital communications equipment. 2. Trains and instructs Telecommunications Technicians, and trainees on work assignments. 3. Assigns and reviews work; trains employees; maintains records of work performed; and may participate in interviewing applicants for employment. 4. Engineers or assists in the engineering of communications systems. 5. Initiates the purchase of parts to maintain a proper inventory balance. 6. Coordinates and schedules the modification of transmitting and receiving equipment to comply with FCC regulations. 7. Handles the more difficult malfunctions of communications equipment; assists technicians on complicated repair jobs; and performs field service work as necessary. 8. Confers with the Manager, Communications Department and other employees on matters affecting the efficiency of the Radio Services Group. 9. May supervise or lead a team of Telecommunications Technicians, Trainees or Telecommunications Equipment Installers on a construction, maintenance, testing or repair project. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I
The equivalent of one year of experience in the class of Telecommunications Technician in the Alameda County classified service. Or II Education: Completion of an accredited electronics training course, And Experience: The equivalent of two years of recent, full-time experience in the installation and repair of land mobile electronic communications equipment, microwave transmitters-receivers, routers and switches. Experience with digital TDM radio and IP technology is desired. Or III Experience: The equivalent of three years of progressively responsible experience in the installation, programming, and repair of land mobile electronic communications equipment, and microwave transmitters-receivers, routers and switches. Experience with digital TDM radio and IP technology is desired. Physical Characteristics Ability and willingness to climb poles and towers to maintain audio transmission antenna support towers and power lines, ability to lift up to 60 pounds. License Requirement 1. Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license. 2. General Radio Telephone Operator’s License. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above minimum qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Knowledge of: • Maintenance and repair of land mobiles, base stations, microwave and other related communications equipment. • Principles and practices of effective supervision. • Personal computer software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets and radio programming. • Modern public safety communications methods including knowledge of digital radio technology. • Laws and regulations on the Federal Communications Commission relating to radio and microwave in the public safety sector. • Tools, materials, equipment and methods used in the communications industry. • Radio-telephone procedure and operations. • Principles and theories upon which VHF, UHF and microwave radio receivers, transmitters, and auxiliary communications equipment. Creation of code plugs for P25 Land Mobile Radios. Ability to: • Lead, supervise and direct the work of subordinate employees. • Read complex schematic diagrams, diagnose problems and perform repairs on a wide variety of electrical equipment. • Use tools and related instruments necessary for testing communications/microwave equipment, such as frequency meters, signal generators, oscilloscopes, voltmeters and other measuring devices. • Repair, maintain, modify and install various types of telecommunications equipment. • Direct and perform the work of large or complex electronics projects. • Design and fabricate new equipment. • Learn techniques and procedures specific to the ITD/Radio Services Group. |
