DESCRIPTION
|
Under direction, to drive a truck, primarily for delivery and pick up services, loading and unloading as necessary; acts as working lead over a small crew; may operate machinery in a warehouse environment; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES Truck Drivers drive commercial vehicles between 26,001 and 58,000 gross vehicle weight (GVW) capacity and are responsible for the movement of heavy supplies and equipment; breakdown, set-up, repair and movement of office furniture; and movement of recyclable material including confidential destruct. Truck Drivers differ from Heavy Truck Drivers who are assigned outdoor maintenance work on flood control or road projects in conjunction with truck driving, or Messengers who drive light vans delivering inter-departmental mail, food, stationery and light supplies for all departments. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Makes scheduled delivery and pickup of materials and supplies such as furniture, hardware and recyclable material, obtaining signatures for all supplies delivered and signing for those picked up. Also responsible for accuracy of count on items at time they are unloaded. 2. Loads trucks for delivery of supplies ensuring proper weight distribution and arrangement of the load for last-on, first-off delivery. Unloads trucks at various delivery points. 3. Picks up trash and delivers to a dump. 4. Maintains routine records on deliveries and pick-ups. Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections as required by the Department of Transportation (DOT) for fuel, oil, water, air brake testing, proper tire pressure, etc. and maintains documentation. 5. Picks up and delivers confidential material for transfer and/or destruction. 6. Assists County agencies with special projects involving the breakdown or set-up and/or delivery or pick-up of material, office furniture and equipment, or related supplies. 7. Acts as working lead over a small crew and directs the work of Supply Clerks II and non- journey level personnel in the completion of pick-up, delivery and/or moving projects. May act as working lead in the performance of warehouse/yard duty operations. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
|
Experience:
The equivalent of six months’ full-time experience driving a truck of at least 26,001-pound Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) capacity. License: Possession of a valid State of California Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with an Air Brake Endorsement. Certification: Possession of a valid California Medical Examiners Certification. Special Requirement: Compliance with Federal Highway Administration Rules, Federal Transit Authority Rules, and the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991. Federal law and County policy requires that positions in the class of Truck Driver are subject to post-offer/pre-placement/pre-duty, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, random, return-to-duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing. Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |

Knowledge of: • Pertinent California Transportation Motor Vehicle Code. • Pertinent City, State and Federal laws, ordinances, and safety regulations • Basic mechanical duties. • Safety practices and procedures including the use of safety equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). • Warehouse safety practices and machinery, e.g., forklifts, balers, crushers, etc. • Basic computer skills Ability to: • Drive safely and skillfully. • Work well in a team environment. • Comply with traffic laws. • Properly load and unload heavy equipment, furniture, and other materials. • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and complete and maintain applicable documentation. • Perform manual labor. • Demonstrate attention to detail. • Plan, organize and schedule assigned tasks. • Use hand tools and power tools in a safe manner. • Works safely in a warehouse environment. • Work in all weather conditions. • Provide excellent customer service. |
