DESCRIPTION

Under direction, to drive a truck used in road and flood control maintenance and construction work, loading and unloading as necessary; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES This is the journey-level class in the operation of heavy trucks. Heavy Truck Drivers operate a variety of heavy trucks and may be assigned lead responsibility over a small crew. Heavy Truck Drivers differ from Truck Drivers by being assigned outdoor maintenance and construction work. Truck Drivers, by contrast, are assigned delivery types of duties and do not participate in heavy construction. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
|
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Drives a truck to carry workers and equipment; hauls materials and supplies such as sand, rock, plant mix, lumber, broken concrete, culverts and concrete pipe, and other materials used in construction and maintenance of roads and flood control systems; and hauls dirt, stumps, and other debris away from work sites. 2. Drives water tank trucks, weed-spray trucks, transport trucks, and pulls various types of trailers, compressors or pumps. Operates vacuum trucks, patch trucks, and other equipment. 3. Helps load and unload truck. 4. Does simple vehicle maintenance, such as checking oil, water, and tire pressure, and performs inspections of vehicles as required by DOT. 5. Helps in constructing culverts, drainage ditches and channels; helps in road construction, patching and surfacing; participates generally in all laboring phases of road and flood control construction and maintenance work. 6. May act as working lead over a small crew; including creating labor, equipment, and material records for crew and maintaining logs regarding work done. 7. Assists in the training of Laborer or Truck Drivers by demonstrating vehicle operation and providing instruction. 8. Performs Laborer work associated with work on patch, utility and construction crews performing work on road or flood maintenance or construction projects. |
