Under general supervision, to service automotive vehicles and light-duty trucks (up to 1-ton rating) with oil, fuel, and coolant; to inspect vehicles for preventative maintenance; to lubricate vehicles; to repair tires and make other minor repairs; to shuttle and park cars; and to do related work as required.  

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES  

This position is located in the General Services Agency, Motor Vehicles Unit.  Auto Service Workers perform routine servicing, minor repair, and unit replacement on County vehicles at the Motor Vehicles facilities, including motor pool and shop locations, and at various parking lots throughout the County.  Auto Service Workers receive direction from the Auto Mechanic Supervisor and Lead Mechanic and are expected to work with minimal supervision.

NOTE:  The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification.  However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.  Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Services passenger vehicles, vans and light-duty trucks with fuel, oil, and coolant.
2. Performs preventative maintenance services following inspection task list and manufacturer’s recommendations; checks batteries using test equipment and air pressure in tires, adding air as necessary.
3. Performs vehicle upkeep; washes and waxes cars, vacuums and cleans interiors, and removes debris.
4. Removes, replaces and balances wheels; removes and repairs tires.
5. Parks vehicles in garage or in lot; operates and assists motor pool dispatch, as needed, including dispatching vehicles to customers, and refueling and parking returned cars in designated spaces; shuttles vehicles between locations.
6. Performs new vehicle prep for department assignment, including installation of decals on patrol vehicles and stickers on pool cars to designate County vehicles.
7. Cleans garage and shop floors; disposes of used tires; and may clean offices, and washrooms.
8. Performs emergency servicing of vehicles in the field.
9. Performs daily/weekly shop safety inspections using task sheet and submits results to management; maintains daily underground storage tank monitoring logs.  
10. May chauffeur County officials in passenger vehicles or vans.
11. Accesses computer to retrieve vehicle maintenance history data and computer repair manuals.
12. Maintains computer records to document amount of time spent on each vehicle and of work performed.
13. Performs general shop tasks as assigned, including organizing parts’ room, shop tools, and hazardous waste containers; assists vendors in unloading/loading parts and equipment; moves dumpsters to and from the street level per schedule.
14. Performs minor salvage prep/strip out of decommissioned vehicles and installs minor equipment, including GPS plug-in devices and fuel ring mounting. May also assist Auto Mechanic with certain tasks such as mounting and balancing tires while the Auto Mechanic repairs brakes or participate as driver while the Auto Mechanic runs diagnostics.

EITHER I  

Education:  

The equivalent of one (1) year training/education in basic automotive technology.  

AND  

Experience:  

The equivalent of one (1) year of full-time experience in automotive repair or maintenance.  

OR II  

Experience:  

The equivalent of two (2) years of full-time experience in automotive repair or maintenance.  

License:     

• Possession of a valid California State Motor Vehicle Operator's license. 
• Candidates must submit evidence from the DMV showing current status of their license at the time of application and must have a clean driving record for the previous three-year period.    

NOTE:    The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.
