DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, to provide preventive maintenance and to diagnose mechanical failure in passenger vehicles, vans, light-duty trucks (up to 1-ton rating); to complete major overhauling and repair work; to design and install special equipment in vehicles; to conduct comprehensive vehicle inspections ensuring that vehicles are in safe working condition; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This position is located in the Public Works Agency and the Motor Vehicle Division of the General Services Agency.  Auto Mechanics are assigned complex diagnostic work and perform maintenance and repair work on automatic and standard transmissions and may be required to design mountings for and to install push bars, cages and other equipment.  Auto Mechanics are required to work with minimal supervision and are distinguished from the classification of Auto Mechanic Supervisor in that the latter has full supervisorial responsibilities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification.  However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.  Each employee in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  1. Diagnoses and identifies source of mechanical and electrical failures; repairs and replaces engines, automatic and standard transmissions, clutch and brake systems, starting and charging systems, fuel, oil, and water pumps, ignition and other electrical systems; repairs, replaces, and diagnoses emission control and computerized control systems and other major components of automobiles.
  2. Designs, fabricates and installs necessary brackets or mountings, security cages, shelving or other accessories using welding equipment.  May remove standard generators and alternators and reinstall heavy-duty generators and alternators.
  3.  Designs and fabricates mounting for and installs special equipment, such as sirens, guns and lights, making necessary electrical modifications.
  4. Tunes up engines, removes, inspects and replaces sparkplugs; takes compression tests; and adjusts timing and valves.  Inspects, cleans, overhauls, and, if necessary, replaces carburetors and fuel injection systems.  Repairs or replaces brake systems, turns rotors and drums.  Repairs and replaces exhaust systems, such as mufflers, tailpipes, catalytic converters and other parts.
  5. Checks work on chassis dynamometer to determine whether work is satisfactory, and/or in compliance with state mandated standards; or diagnoses problem and makes necessary repairs on a variety of electronically controlled systems.
  6. Makes minor repairs on shop equipment.
  7. Accesses computer to retrieve vehicle maintenance history data, work orders, and online repair manuals.
  8. Maintains computer records to document amount of time spent on each vehicle and of work performed.
  9. Performs emergency servicing of vehicles in the field.
  10. May operate a county tow truck.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Training:

Completion of an accredited apprenticeship in the auto mechanics trade, or an associate degree in Automotive Technology.

AND
Experience:

The equivalent of three (3) years of journey-level experience in the maintenance and repair of passenger vehicles vans or light-duty trucks, including brakes, suspension, steering systems, and electricals/electronics, in an independent shop, dealership, or fleet experience.

License:

Possess and maintain a valid California Motor Vehicle Class C Driver’s License.  Candidates must submit evidence from the DMV showing current status of their license at the time of application and must have a clean driving record for the previous three-year period.  

Certification:

Must possess the following Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications:

  • A6 – Electrical/Electronic Systems.
  • A8 – Engine Performance.
  • L1 – Advanced Engine Performance Specialist.
  • State of California Smog Inspectors License. 
The following certifications are desirable:

  • A1- Engine Repair.
  • A2 - Automatic Transmission.
  • A3 - Manual Drive Train and Axles.
  • A4 - Suspension and Steering.
  • A5 - Brakes.
  • A7 - Heating and Air Conditioning.
  • A9 - Light Vehicle Diesel Engines
State of California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) Training may substitute as follows:

  • Electrical/Electronic Systems Training may substitute for A6-Electrical/Electronic Systems.
  • Engine Performance Systems Training may substitute for A8-Engine Performance.
  • Advanced Engine Performance/Emission Systems Training may substitute for L1-Advanced Engine Performance Specialist.
  • Repair for Diagnostic & Repair may substitute for A-6-Electrical/Electronic Systems, A8-Engine Performance, and L-1.
Special Requirements:

Auto Mechanics must provide their own hand tools.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.


KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Current automotive industry maintenance and repair standards.
  • Basic safety practices and procedures including the use of safety equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Methods, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of passenger vehicles, vans, light-duty trucks and motorcycles.
  • Late model automobile engines, including ignition, electrical, emission control and electronic or computerized systems.
  • Fuel, oil, and water pumps.
  • Differentials and drive systems.
  • Clutch, braking and suspension systems.
  • All other major functioning parts of automobiles, vans, light-duty trucks and motorcycles.
  • Operation and repair of automatic and standard transmissions.
  • Emission control system and testing devices.

  • Current automotive industry maintenance and repair standards.

Ability to:

  • Use tools and equipment skillfully and safely in making complex automotive repairs.
  • Gather and analyze any needed information to diagnose causes of mechanical and electrical failure in passenger vehicles, vans, light-duty trucks and motorcycles.
  • Design and fabricate special installations.
  • Read and understand manufacturers’ specification and repair manuals, including those produced on electronic media.
  • Follow written and oral instructions.
  • Operate computer programs and utilize technology.
  • Use fleet management systems and online repair manuals.
  • Use current smog testing equipment.
  • Perform work safely.
  • Operate a tow truck.
  • Work collaboratively.
