DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, to supervise the installation, maintenance, and painting of traffic safety signs and striping; and to perform related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES The Traffic Safety Supervisor is the first-line supervisor responsible for the installation, maintenance, and painting of traffic safety signs, traffic lanes, and pavement legends for Alameda County. This class reports to and is distinguished from the Traffic Signal Supervisor class in that the latter class is a second-line supervisor with over-all responsibility for the installation and maintenance of traffic signs, lighting and other related electrical equipment. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
|
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Directs the work crews engaged in the installation, maintenance or replacement of traffic signs, traffic lines and pavement legends; maintains inventory of traffic warning and regulatory signs, raised pavement markers, traffic paint and other supplies necessary for the maintenance of the County traffic safety devices. 2. Estimates quantities of material required for restriping after contract work on slurry seals, resurfacing, etc.; reviews blueprints to determine work assignments and makes recommendations on modifications; works directly with the Traffic Engineer to review upcoming projects and existing traffic safety. 3. Maintains records of traffic safety device installations showing when the device was installed and its maintenance history; prepares California Highway Patrol collision reports and estimates damages to County property; serves as an expert witness in defense of claims against the County. 4. Meets with citizens concerning existing or requested safety devices; conducts or coordinates crew safety training and assures compliance with safety procedures; maintains records and prepares other reports as required; attends meetings as assigned to provide input of traffic marking activities. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I
Experience: The equivalent of two years’ full-time experience in the class of Traffic Painter or Traffic Sign worker in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.) Or II Experience: The equivalent of three years’ full-time experience in traffic safety device installation, maintenance and repair work in accordance with State of California Standards or the equivalent, at least one of which was in a supervisory capacity. And License: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Knowledge of: • Basic principles and practices of supervision and leadership. • Estimating, inspecting, planning, scheduling, and job control practices. • Terminology, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the installation of signs, proper application of paints and markers to road surfaces. • Practices of safe and efficient operations and maintenance along roadways. • Various government codes and regulations pertaining to traffic control and signing along highways and roadways. • State of California Standards Plans. • Principles of supervision, operational record-keeping methods. Ability to: • Make decisions. • Plan and organize. • Set standards of performance in order to control and optimize the productivity of staff. • Estimate the staffing and equipment required for signing and striping projects. • Keep records and special files as necessary. • Read and interpret blueprints, plans, specifications, and government regulations. • Train subordinates in all phases of work and safety procedures. • Operate a variety of equipment utilized in signing and pavement marking operations. Working Conditions: Duties require standing, walking on level and uneven surfaces, kneeling, squatting, and stooping in the performance of installation and inspection duties. Incumbents are required to drive daily for periods up to two hours and frequently get in and out of the vehicle. During the course of duties incumbents may be required to lift signs and other materials weighting in excess of 25 pounds. Duties require working in all weather conditions; around loud noise and dust from jackhammers, grinders, and other construction equipment; around fumes from paint, paint thinner, epoxy and diesel. The incumbent of this position will perform duties near moving traffic on a daily basis. |
