DESCRIPTION

Under close supervision, to train in the performance of maintenance and repairs on County operated drawbridges and associated equipment; to use machine tools in performing mechanical repairs; to identify the source of mechanical or electrical failures; to train new Bridge Tenders on how to operate each drawbridge; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Bridge Utility Workers, under the direction and supervision of the Assistant Bridge Supervisor and Bridge Mechanics, train in the maintenance and repair of single and double leaf bascule and vertical lift bridges. Incumbents perform routine electrical and mechanical maintenance. Repairs and installations are made under general supervision. Under direct supervision, incumbents perform troubleshooting techniques to locate and repair mechanical or electrical failures. This is a trainee-level class in mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair of heavy industrial equipment. Incumbents must qualify and be able to operate County operated drawbridges. It is distinguished from the class of Bridge Mechanic in that the latter is the fully qualified journey level in this series.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Performs routine maintenance on a variety of electrical and mechanical equipment.

2. Assists the Bridge Mechanics in overhauls, adjustments and repairs to a variety of electrical and mechanical equipment necessary to maintain County operated drawbridges in a serviceable and safe operating condition.

3. Learns troubleshooting techniques to locate sources of electrical or mechanical failure, such as locking mechanisms, air buffers, limit switches, racks, pinions and trunnions on bridges, inter-communications systems, electrical circuits, electric motors, pumps, hydraulic systems, and other equipment.

4. Under supervision, repairs, modifies or installs electrical and mechanical equipment requiring the use of complex blueprints and schematics.

5. Under supervision, performs general machine shop work using a wide variety of machine tools, such as power lathes, drill presses, and grinders.

6. Uses welding, brazing and soldering equipment in the repair and maintenance of bridge and bridge related equipment.

7. Is on 24-hour call in case of emergency requiring immediate bridge repairs.

8. Performs duties as Bridge Tender when required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

Either I

The equivalent of two years’ experience as a Bridge Tender in Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

Or II

The equivalent of one year of journey-level experience in any of the following areas; manufacture, assembly, operation, installation, maintenance or repair of heavy industrial electro-mechanical equipment (such as electric motors over 25 H.P., large cranes, or elevator, etc.).

Special Requirement:

Must have normal hearing and eyesight, including depth perception and freedom from color and night blindness.

License:

1. Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
2. Must qualify for a Federal Communications Commission Restricted Radiotelephone Operator permit.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

Knowledge of:

• Basic electricity.
• Standard safety practices.
• Maintenance methods, procedures, tools and equipment used in the skilled trades necessary for the maintenance and repair and installation of heavy industrial, electrical and mechanical equipment.
• Regulations governing the operation of drawbridges.

Ability to:

• Learn the operation of all county operated bridges.
• Learn the detailed operation of bridge machinery, electrical systems and pertinent maintenance methods.
• Read blueprints and electrical schematics.
• Understand and communicate clearly in the English language, both written and oral.
• Act quickly and judiciously in emergency situations.
• Climb stairs and ladders and to work in open steel bridge structures at heights to 180 feet and in counterweight pit areas to 40 feet below the estuary water level.
• Learn the operation of machine tools and equipment used in mechanical repairs, such as lathes, drill presses, band saws, welders and to use hand tools skillfully in making complex repairs to bridge structural members.
• Learn the use of all types of electrical test meters and equipment.
• Keep records and logs, prepare written and make oral reports.
• Supervise and train Bridge Tenders.
• Learn the operation of and use proper radiotelephone procedures.
