DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, to install, maintain, and repair all types of traffic signals and any other electronic or electric traffic control devices; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

The Traffic Signal Technician is the journey-level position responsible for the installation, maintenance and repairs of traffic signals and other electronic or electrical traffic control devices. It is distinguished from the next higher level classification of Traffic Signal Supervisor in that the latter has overall supervision responsibility over Traffic Signal Technicians.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Installs, maintains, and repairs traffic signal systems including wiring, conduits, signal poles, controllers, electronic switching equipment, and vehicle detectors.
2. Makes continuous and detailed field checks to locate trouble or causes or failure; adjusts electronic and switch type detectors (i.e., sonar, radar, hard rubber, and magnetic), and time controllers (i.e., fixed time, and volume density); replaces signal lamps; checks fire preemptors and time clocks; cleans signal faces and reflectors; bypasses faulty parts.
3. Installs street lights and traffic signals including construction of concrete base, erection of signal poles, hanging of signal faces, building up control cabinets, laying of wiring and conduits, and testing the completed installation.
4. Operates and maintains various electronic and electric measuring devices such as voltmeters, ampmeters, multitesters, wave meters and master controller testers.
5. Inspects electrical and electronic portions of traffic signal installations done by private contractors.
6. Prepares and maintains simple reports and records such as a repair history on all traffic signal devices, requests for materials, daily work reports, and time sheets.
7. Performs the bench work including trouble shooting and repairs of signal relays, vehicle detectors, safety monitor, motor controllers, opticom detectors, and time clocks; replaces parts as necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I
Experience:

The equivalent of two years’ full-time experience as a Traffic Signal Technician Trainee in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

Or II
Education:

Graduation from an accredited electrical or electronic trade school. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

And
Experience:

The equivalent of one year of full-time experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electric and electronic traffic control devices.

License: 

Possess and maintain a valid California Motor Vehicle Class C Driver’s License. Candidates must submit evidence from the DMV showing current status of their license at the time of application and must have a clean driving record for the previous three-year period.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

Special Working Condition:

• Subject to 24-hour call out.
• Work in all weather conditions.
