DESCRIPTION
|
Under close supervision, to train in the installation, maintenance, and repair of all types of traffic signals and any other electronic or electric traffic control devices; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES The purpose of this class is to provide training in the repair and maintenance of the traffic signals and other traffic control devices used in the Alameda County system. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
|
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Assists in installing, maintaining, and repairing traffic signal systems including wiring, conduits, signal poles, controllers, electronic switching equipment, and vehicle detectors. 2. Assists in making continuous and detailed field checks to locate trouble or causes of failure; adjusts electronic detectors (i.e. video and magnetic), and solid state controllers; replaces signal lamps; checks fire preemptors and time clocks; cleans signal faces and reflectors; bypasses faulty parts. 3. Assists in operating and maintaining various electronic and electric measuring devices such as, voltmeters, ampmeters, multitesters, wave meters and oscilloscopes. 4. Prepares and maintains simple reports and records such as a repair history on all traffic signal devices, requests for materials, daily work reports, and time sheets. 5. May assist with the bench work including reconditioning and repairing of micro computer signal controllers, vehicle detectors (inductive, microwave and video), load switches (AC to DC converters), motor controllers, streetlights and time clocks; replacing components and parts as necessary. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Completion of an approved electrical or electronic trade school curriculum. (One-year experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electric and/or electronic devices may be substituted for the required education). License: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |

Knowledge of: • Electrical and electronic theory. • Tools and equipment used to repair electronic equipment. • Schematics and plans and specifications. Ability to: • Read and interpret plans and specifications. • Learn to repair and test electronic equipment • Learn to operate and maintain a variety of electrical and electronic portions of traffic signal systems installed by private contractors. • Learn traffic installation inspection techniques. • Follow general and detailed verbal and written instructions. |
