DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, repairs street lights, changes bulbs, photo cells, lenses, ballasts, and street light units. Incumbents may also assist with the installation and repair of some traffic signal systems; and performs other related duties.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Positions in the class of Street Light Technician are located in the Traffic Signal Section of the Maintenance and Operations Department of the Public Works Agency. Incumbents receive direction from a Traffic Signal Supervisor. This class is distinguished from the class of Traffic Signal Technician in that the latter class is responsible for traffic signal repair whereas the former class is primarily responsible for street light repair.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Repairs street lights, changes bulbs, photo cells, lenses, ballasts, and street light units; installs street light and traffic signal units; changes bulbs on traffic signal units; replaces street light poles.

2. Prepares simple reports and records such as repair history on street lights and traffic signal lights, daily work reports and records of materials used on vehicle; maintains inventory of street light materials on vehicle.

3. Drive set route at night as required to locate outages.

4. May assist Traffic Signal Technician in performance of duties; conducts lane closures safely and correctly; operates lift vehicle, crane vehicle.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I

The equivalent of one year of full-time experience as a Laborer in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District
Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

Or II

The equivalent of two years of full-time experience in the trouble shooting, repair and maintenance of street light systems and equipment.

License:

A candidate possessing a valid Class A Permit with endorsement classifications of Hazardous (H) and Tanks (N) or X (combination of H & N) issued by the State of California and a valid Medical Certificate may be allowed to participate in the examination. Within six months of appointment, an employee must obtain possession of a valid Class A Driver’s license with required endorsement classifications of Hazardous (H) and Tanks (N) or X (combination of H & N) without restrictions and a valid Medical Certificate in order to continue employment.

Special Requirements:

Federal law and County policy requires that positions in the class of Street Light Technician performing safety sensitive functions are subject to post-offer/pre-placement/pre-duty, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, random, return-to-duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above minimum qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

Working Conditions:

• Street Light Technicians are subject to 24-hour call out.
• Street Light Technicians are subject to work in high traffic areas.
• Street Light Technicians are subject to work in all weather conditions
