DESCRIPTION

Under close supervision, to assist in the operation and maintenance of steam power and heating equipment; to oil and grease auxiliary equipment; to repair simple electrical and mechanical appliances; to help repair or fabricate complex or specialized electrical and mechanical equipment; to clean the boiler room and adjoining areas; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Incumbents in this class are always under the supervision of a watch engineer who is either in the boiler room or on the grounds within call and are responsible for routine operation and maintenance of the boilers and auxiliary equipment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Inspects boilers for proper water levels and steam pressures; inspects boiler feed pumps, fuel oil supply, and condensate drain pumps, air compressors, draft fans, feed-water heater, and water softeners for proper operation.

2. Lights boilers, raises steam to operating pressures, and connects boiler to steam distribution lines.

3. Logs telephone calls and messages pertaining to upkeep and repairs; brings calls of an emergency nature to attention of proper authorities.

4. Performs minor electrical, mechanical or plumbing repairs on bed lamps, vacuum cleaners, call bells, valves, plumbing stoppages, broken steam lines, locks, and door stops.

5. Helps engineer, plumber, or electrician repair, fabricate or install pumps, burners, control devices, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, steam, water and sewage systems, electrical power, lighting and communication equipment, and special medical apparatus.

6. Sweeps, cleans, waxes or polishes boiler room and adjoining areas, and equipment installed therein.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I

Experience:

The equivalent of one year of recent, paid experience in the operation and repair of boilers and related equipment or in general maintenance and mechanical work.


Or II

Some acceptable combination of education and appropriate experience.

License:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• Common tools required in building maintenance.
• Operation and maintenance of steam boilers and related pumps, valves and piping systems,
• Safety precautions and hazards of pressure vessels and lines.

Abilities:

• Maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures and simple electrical equipment including fuses, circuit breakers, electrical cords, etc.
• Reading charts and gauges and performing arithmetic computations.
• Keeping accurate records.
• Following written and verbal instructions.
