DESCRIPTION

Under close supervision, to perform semi-skilled preventive mechanical maintenance and repair work on equipment in County Buildings; and to perform related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES Building Equipment Maintenance Worker (Apprentice) is an entry-level trainee position. Incumbents receive on-the-job training in the areas of roofing, rough carpentry, painting, cement work, underground pipe installation, plumbing, heating, ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. This class differs from the next higher level class of Building Equipment Maintenance Worker in that incumbents of the latter position perform maintenance and repair work on a more independent basis. Incumbents are required to concurrently attend an approved construction trade apprenticeship program during their tenure in this classification. This class is flexibly staffed with Building Equipment Maintenance Worker. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Assists Building equipment Maintenance Worker in the Maintenance and repair of a large number of exhaust fans; the lubrication and greasing of fan bearings; and changing and adjusting tension on V belts. 2. Attends classes to gain technical knowledge relevant to current theories and practices of the trades. 3. Assists Stationary Engineers, Electricians, or Plumbers in general repairs on elevators, conveyor systems, boilers, steam lines, water lines, and plumbing fixtures. 4. Assists in the repair of office furniture, lighting fixtures, venetian blinds, fire alarm systems and dispensing devices. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I
Education: Must be currently enrolled in an accredited construction trade apprenticeship program. Or II Some acceptable combination of education and appropriate experience. License: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |

Knowledge of: • Common tools, materials, equipment and methods used in repair work in the plumbing trade and in electrical, heating, ventilating and refrigeration equipment maintenance and repair. • Basic math.
