DESCRIPTION

Under direction, to do skilled mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, trouble shooting and repair on various pieces of stationary equipment (electrical and mechanical support systems), and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Plant Mechanics do independent maintenance, electrical and mechanical repair work. The incumbents trouble shoot and diagnose malfunctions; perform emergency and major maintenance, as well as preventive maintenance, install new equipment, and modify existing equipment and systems.

This classification differs from the class of Building Equipment Maintenance Worker in that the latter class is responsible for semi-skilled maintenance of electrical and mechanical, heating, ventilation and refrigeration equipment. Additionally, Plant Mechanics work with greater independent responsibility than Building Equipment Maintenance Workers.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Diagnoses problems, disassembles, repairs, reassembles, calibrates, and tests plant equipment such as gear trains, motors, air compressors, reciprocating engines, mufflers, fans, blowers and pumps of various types.
2. Inspects equipment and machinery to determine wear, parts replacement, and/or weak points. Establishes and maintains an inventory of needed repair materials and parts.
3. Builds and installs various side storage cabinets, replaces and repairs roof hatches, and installs portable flooring over sumps and open pit areas.
4. Installs, maintains, trouble shoots and repairs fuel systems, tanks above and below ground, air system piping for instrumentation, and water and utilities plumbing supply.
5. Investigates, analyzes and repairs electrical and electro-mechanical malfunctions in ultrasonic controls, circuit breakers, panels, lighting circuits, and other electrical devices.
6. Performs preventive maintenance inspections of storm water lift stations and their related equipment.
7. Trains new employees in the methods of station operations as well as specific maintenance procedures.
8. Maintains accurate records of daily activity, equipment maintenance, inventory, material expenditures, oil reports and planned maintenance forms.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

The equivalent of two years of experience in the maintenance and operation of electrical and mechanical industrial equipment (such as deep well pumps, air compressors, air blowers and reciprocating engines). Completion of an approved apprenticeship in a related field such as machinist, auto mechanic, electrician, or electronic technician, or a combination thereof, may be substituted for not more than one year of work experience.

License: 

Possess and maintain a valid California Motor Vehicle Class C Driver's License. Candidates must submit evidence from the DMV showing current status of their license at the time of application and must have a clean driving record for the previous three-year period.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• Electronics (printed circuits, motor controller’s telemetry, etc.).

• Trouble shoot complex A.C.-D.C. electrical circuits.

• Perform maintenance and repair of diesel gas, and natural gas
engines and components.
• Perform instrument repairs and calibration.
• Install, maintain and repair a variety of pumps.
• Work independently.
• Read blueprints.
• Working under pressure.
• Follow written and oral instructions.
