Introduction

THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year, but can be extended.

Applications must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing. Postmarks are not accepted. Applications will only be accepted on-line.

DESCRIPTION

EXISTING VACANCIES

While the immediate vacancy for this position is currently located with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, the eligible list resulting from this recruitment and selection process may be utilized for other future vacancies which may arise within the next year for these and other Alameda County departments and agencies.

THE POSITION

Under direction, to perform difficult and complex accounting clerical work in connection with the maintenance of financial records and the preparation of financial reports; and to do related work as required.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications stated below, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated a track record of success in the following areas:

-Possess effective oral and written communication skills.

-Possess the ability to monitor unit activities to ensure the responsibilities/duties of the members are clearly understood and completed accurately. ·

-Demonstrate the ability to discipline, document, and write performance reviews and the ability to work with individuals to help develop the skills necessary for current and future tasks.

-Strong knowledge of general and governmental accounting, auditing principles and practices and expertise in account reconciliation, financial analysis, preparing deposit journals/transfers and running reports.

-Demonstrate the ability to prioritize and accurately complete assignments and tasks, and adjusts priorities when appropriate.

-An understanding of the principles and practices of supervision.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I

The equivalent of one year of experience in the class of Account Clerk II or in an equivalent or higher level clerical class, or the equivalent of two years of experience in the class of Account Clerk I in the Alameda County classified service.

Or II

The equivalent of three years of responsible financial record-keeping experience. (Completion of a bookkeeping or accounting curriculum in a recognized business or accredited junior college may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.)

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:

• The purposes, methods, and practices of financial record-keeping work.
• General governmental accounting and bookkeeping principles and procedures.
• Modern office methods and equipment.
• Computer literacy; i.e., Lotus, Quattro Pro, Excel, etc.
• Principles of supervision.

Ability to:

• Locate and provide basic analysis of data found in large accounting systems, such as those maintained by County agency, Auditor's Office or Tax Collector's office.
• Prepare periodic and special financial reports.
• Identify and correct errors in a variety of mathematical computations and financial documents.
• Use automated spreadsheet software.
• Delegate and supervise the work of others.
• Work independently in the absence of specific instructions.
• Operate standard office machines.
• Apply rules and regulations to specific cases.
• Establish and maintain cooperative relations with the public.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF the following steps:

1) A review of candidates' applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.

2) A WRITTEN EXAMINATION (Qualifying only). Candidates passing this test will move on to the next step in the examination process.

3) An ORAL EXAMINATION which will be weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises.

CANDIDATES MUST ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACH PORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION. We reserve the right to make changes to the announced examination components.
