Janitor, Floor Specialist

Alameda County's General Services Agency delivers a host of support services to County departments and agencies. These services fall into several major categories: Technical — architectural, engineering, energy and hazardous materials management; Building Maintenance — building maintenance and repairs, janitorial services and minor remodeling and alterations; Construction — new facilities and major remodeling; Procurement — purchasing and contract administration; Fleet Services; Childcare Planning; Human Resources, Payroll, Information Systems and Parking Administration. The mission of the GSA is to provide high quality, cost effective, and timely support services for County departments and other public agencies, so they can better serve the public and business community.

Under general supervision, to strip, wax, refinish and shampoo various types of floors in an assigned area; may also be assigned to general janitorial duties. This class of Janitor- Floor Specialist is distinguished from the class of Janitor, in that the former is primarily assigned to maintain the floors in County buildings by using manual and powered floor maintenance equipment including buffers, strippers, waxers, carpet extractors and bonnets. All janitorial staff performs routine vacuuming, sweeping and mopping, however Floor Specialist differ from the Janitor classification because of their specialization in floor care. Incumbents may be required to travel between assigned locations and secure the facility at the end of their shift. Incumbents must have the ability to work with limited or no supervision, nights, and evenings.

The class of Janitor- Floor Specialist is distinguished from Lead Janitor in that the latter class has lead responsibility for a group of Janitors in addition to performing janitorial work.

Janitor- Floor Specialist may be assigned to work a variety of shifts and locations within the County.

In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications stated below, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated a track record of success in the following areas:

  • Proven Janitorial and Floor Care experience working in large facilities or institutions that require security background clearance such as jails and juvenile institutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with chemicals, solutions, low and high powered buffers, carpet extractors, bonnet machines, wet/dry vacuum, vacuum cleaners, air blowers and ride on equipment.
  • Commitment to provide exceptional customer service to County Officials, staff, co-workers and members of the public.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with County Officials, staff, co-workers and members of the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new equipment, procedures, and cleaning methods and immediately apply them to Janitor, Floor Specialist tasks.
  • Adjusts to changes in work environments, work responsibilities, clients, equipment, and supplies while maintaining a satisfactory level of performance.
  • Ability to accurately complete Janitor, Floor Specialist tasks and duties while paying close attention to all details.
  • Outstanding organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks to ensure they are completed in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Proven safety record as demonstrated by the ability to safely work with chemicals, solutions, heavy equipment and the ability to safely move heavy furniture. The Janitor, Floor Specialist must also have demonstrated ability to identify safety issues and immediately report concerns and/or take corrective action.
  • Due to work locations, ideal candidates will be able to obtain and maintain security clearance.

The equivalent of six months’ full-time experience in offices or an institution and completion of manufacturer’s floor care training.


The equivalent of six months direct floor care experience that included carpet, tile and finished concrete.


A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

Special Requirement:
Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance.

The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:


Knowledge of:

• Modern janitorial methods, materials and equipment, including the proper use of power- driven waxing and buffing machines, soaps, detergents, disinfectants, cleaning compounds, extractors, carpet machines and pressure washers.

Ability to:

• Communicate orally, including the ability to follow oral instructions.
• Communicate in writing, including the ability to follow written instructions.
• Perform repetitive tasks without continuous supervision.
• Work effectively with a wide variety of people.
• Correctly and safely use janitorial materials, products and equipment.
• Lift and move items up to 50 pounds.
• Learn basic computer skills.


The examination will consist of the following steps: A review of candidates' applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process which is a performance examination which will be qualifying only. Those candidates scoring highest on the performance exam will move on to the next step in the examination process, an oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises. CANDIDATES MUST ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACH PORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION. We reserve the right to make changes to the announced examination components.
