YOU MUST BE AN ALAMEDA COUNTY EMPLOYEE TO APPLY

Current employment and completion by Wednesday, December 11, 2019, of the equivalent of six months of continuous service following a regular appointment in the Alameda County classified service. A regular appointment does not include provisional, TAP (Temporary Assignment Pool), or STEP-UP appointments. DESCRIPTION

THE POSITION
Under direction, to investigate violations of laws; or, to supervise an assigned detail of subordinates in routine patrol activities, in detention and corrections duties, in civil process duties, or in varied criminal justice assignments; or, to coordinate emergency services preparedness programs and volunteer activities; and to do related work as required.

This class represents the first level of supervision or specialist in the peace officer series. Positions in this class are usually assigned duties in supervising subordinates assigned to all divisions of the Department; and carrying out criminal, juvenile or department administrative investigations or performing extradition duties involving the transport of prisoners from other jurisdictions. Sergeants also train new employees in law enforcement techniques, in detention and corrections operations, in investigative procedures, in civil process, and in other areas of criminal justice assignments. Duties typically involve operating within well-defined departmental or legal procedures and include responsibility for supervision and evaluation of subordinate performance. Sergeants are responsible for assigning and training of staff and inspections of personnel, facilities, equipment and vehicles at their assigned duty stations. This class differs from the next higher class of Lieutenant by the latter having more extensive authority in the execution of administrative powers. Lieutenants generally serve as Watch Commanders or Unit Commanders. Sergeants differ from the lower class of Deputy Sheriff II by the Sergeant being a first-line supervisory class.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

Candidates must have completed their probationary period as a member of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and possess the following:

Either I

The equivalent of three years’ full-time continuous experience as a Deputy Sheriff I/II in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

Or II

The equivalent of five years’ full-time California law enforcement experience, which must include a minimum of two years as a Deputy Sheriff I/II in the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and possession of an Advanced Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.

License:

Possession of a valid California State Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

Special Requirement:

Federal law and County policy requires that certain positions in the class of Sergeant which require a commercial driver's license and the performance of duties defined as "safety sensitive" are subject to post-offer/pre-placement/pre-duty, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, random, return-to-duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS:
1. A review of candidates' applications and supplemental questionnaire to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move onto the next step in the examination process.
2. A written test which will be qualifying only (pass/fail). Candidates who pass the written test will move forward to the next step of the examination process. Although not mandatory, candidates may attend the upcoming Sergeant Candidate's Orientation on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, 5:00 - 6:00 PM, at the Office of Emergency Services, 4985 Broder Blvd., Dublin, CA. This orientation provides information on the upcoming oral presentation portion of the exam. Note: only candidates who pass the written test will move on to the next steps of the recruitment examination process.
3. An Assessment Center which will be weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score. The Assessment Center may include situational exercises where you may have to perform mock job duties to demonstrate your level of competency.

Veterans’ Preference
Each applicant entitled to veterans’ preference as provided in the Alameda County Civil Service Rules who has served in the armed forces of the United States during a war or campaign as defined by Section 1897 of the Government Code of the State of California and who has been discharged or released under honorable conditions and wishes to claim such preference shall do so by presenting proof of his/her honorable discharge (DD214) from the armed forces of the United States, showing the dates of his/her military service. Each applicant entitled to Disabled Veterans’ points as provided in the Alameda County Civil Service Rules, who wishes to claim such preference shall additionally present proof of military-connected disability from the United States Veterans Administration.

U.S. military veterans (including applicants already employed by the County of Alameda) intending to claim preferential consideration pursuant to Alameda County Civil Service Rules must present proof of honorable discharge or release (DD Form 214) concurrent with this application but in no event later than the final step in the recruitment process (usually the oral interview.)

To claim veteran’s preference, proof must be presented during check in on the date of the applicant’s scheduled oral interview. Failure to submit proof by this date will forfeit the applicant's claim to veterans' preference in such examination. 

Candidates will be required to present a valid photo I.D. for admittance to each phase of the examination, i.e., driver's license, military I.D., Passport, or California Department of Motor Vehicle's I.D. card.
