At the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, we review and prosecute criminal violations committed in Alameda County, bring criminal and civil actions for environmental, consumer and other violations, protect and uphold the rights of victims, and serve our community in various innovative ways (such as restorative justice projects). The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office is comprised of approximately 150 attorneys, 60 inspectors, 30 Victim-Witness advocates and claim specialists, as well as a variety of administrative, finance, and communications professionals. Our jurisdiction covers over 800 square miles and our staff work in 9 offices located throughout the County.


We have six specialized divisions within the office:

Within the Criminal Prosecution Division, we have numerous specialized units dedicated to specific areas. Some of the units include: domestic violence, gangs, sexual assault, human trafficking, DNA/unsolved cases, truancy, identity theft, sexually violent predators, child abduction and more. These units are staffed by experienced, highly skilled prosecutors who are experts in their individual fields.

DESCRIPTION

THE POSITION:

 

The District Attorney’s Office is recruiting for paralegals to assist in the investigation, organization and prosecution of complex cases within the District Attorney’s office.  Duties may include:

 

·         Providing senior level paralegal assistance to multiple prosecutors in complex criminal prosecutions or civil

        enforcement/litigation matters;

·         Assembling, organizing, analyzing, summarizing and preserving case materials;

·         Document review and searches using litigation support software;

·         Drafting of pleadings, discovery requests, interrogatories, subpoenas, deposition notices, correspondence and

        other documents;

·         Collecting, compiling and duplicating evidence sought by opposing parties;

·         Legal research and memo writing;

·         Preparation and participation in negotiations, depositions, hearings and trials;

·         Calendar management (calendaring court deadlines and appearances);

·         Assisting attorneys in interviewing witnesses and preparing declarations


All positions are at-will appointments and will be made at the discretion of the District Attorney.  Appointments will be based on an evaluation of experience, skills, knowledge and demonstrated abilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

·         Possession of an undergraduate degree (B.A. / B.S) from an accredited College or University.

·         Possession of a Paralegal Certificate.

·         Prior paralegal experience in a California law office or with a government agency.

·         Applicant must be able to pass a health history examination and LiveScan fingerprint background check.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

REQUIRED SKILLS:

 

·         Proficiency at word processing, Excel, Access, Westlaw and litigation support software;

·         Knowledge of legal principles, processes and practices;

·         Ability to conduct legal research and analyze a variety of legal documents, files and records;

·         Ability to investigate facts and obtain relevant information;

·         Ability to read voluminous documents and prepare concise written summaries;

·         Ability to prepare affidavits and declarations;

·         Ability to plan and complete work assignments with a minimum amount of direction and control;

·         Excellent writing skills;

·         Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.
