YOU MUST BE AN ALAMEDA COUNTY EMPLOYEE TO APPLY
Current employment and completion by Tuesday, January 5, 2021, of the equivalent of six months of continuous service following a regular appointment in the Alameda County classified service. A regular appointment does not include provisional, TAP (Temporary Assignment Pool), or STEP-UP appointments. THE POSITION
Under direction, to investigate violations of laws; or, to supervise an assigned detail of subordinates in routine patrol activities, in detention and corrections duties, in civil process duties, or in varied criminal justice assignments; or, to coordinate emergency services preparedness programs and volunteer activities; and to do related work as required.
This class represents the first level of supervision or specialist in the peace officer series. Positions in this class are usually assigned duties in supervising subordinates assigned to all divisions of the Department; and carrying out criminal, juvenile or department administrative investigations or performing extradition duties involving the transport of prisoners from other jurisdictions. Sergeants also train new employees in law enforcement techniques, in detention and corrections operations, in investigative procedures, in civil process, and in other areas of criminal justice assignments. Duties typically involve operating within well-defined departmental or legal procedures and include responsibility for supervision and evaluation of subordinate performance. Sergeants are responsible for assigning and training of staff and inspections of personnel, facilities, equipment and vehicles at their assigned duty stations. This class differs from the next higher class of Lieutenant by the latter having more extensive authority in the execution of administrative powers. Lieutenants generally serve as Watch Commanders or Unit Commanders. Sergeants differ from the lower class of Deputy Sheriff II by the Sergeant being a first-line supervisory class.

Review for Minimum Qualifications: Completed by Monday, January 11, 2021
During this time, your application will be reviewed to ensure that you meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the bulletin. All candidates will receive an email notification regarding the results of the application review before the end of the week.
Written Examination: Tuesday, January 26, 2021, and/or Wednesday, January 27, 2021. A written test which will be qualifying only (pass/fail). Candidates who pass the written test will move forward to the next step of the examination process, an assessment center.
Candidate Orientation: TBD. This orientation provides candidates information on the upcoming assessment center. Note: Only candidates who pass the written examination will move onto an assessment center. Although not mandatory, candidates are encouraged to attend the orientation.
Assessment Center: Week of February 22, 2021
Candidates who pass the written examination will be invited to participate in an assessment center. The assessment center score will be weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score.

Veterans’ Preference
Each applicant entitled to veterans’ preference as provided in the Alameda County Civil Service Rules who has served in the armed forces of the United States during a war or campaign as defined by Section 1897 of the Government Code of the State of California and who has been discharged or released under honorable conditions and wishes to claim such preference shall do so by presenting proof of his/her honorable discharge (DD214) from the armed forces of the United States, showing the dates of his/her military service. Each applicant entitled to Disabled Veterans’ points as provided in the Alameda County Civil Service Rules, who wishes to claim such preference shall additionally present proof of military-connected disability from the United States Veterans Administration.
U.S. military veterans (including applicants already employed by the County of Alameda) intending to claim preferential consideration pursuant to Alameda County Civil Service Rules must present proof of honorable discharge or release (DD Form 214) concurrent with this application but in no event later than the final step in the recruitment process (usually the oral interview.)
To claim veteran’s preference, proof must be presented during check in on the date of the applicant’s scheduled oral interview. Failure to submit proof by this date will forfeit the applicant's claim to veterans' preference in such examination.
Candidates will be required to present a valid photo I.D. for admittance to each phase of the examination, i.e., driver's license, military I.D., Passport, or California Department of Motor Vehicle's I.D. card.
