Introduction

THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION.  The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year, but can be extended.

Supplemental Questionnaire: A properly completed supplemental questionnaire must be submitted with each application. Failure to submit the supplemental questionnaire will result in disqualification. Applications and Supplemental Questionnaire must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing.

DESCRIPTION

THE AGENCY  
Alameda County General Services Agency (GSA) delivers a host of logistical support services to County agencies and partners from maintenance of facilities and County fleet to energy and environmental management services, capital project management, procurement services, and clean commute and recycling programs. The GSA Community strives not only to provide these services but to also facilitate collaborative and innovative approaches in its efforts.  

While the GSA Community largely focuses on support services for Alameda County departments and other public agencies, the work has a direct impact on the communities. GSA builds structures such as libraries and youth centers that transform communities, provides opportunities for local businesses, and works towards ensuring that County work practices minimize negative impacts to the environment. THE POSITION 
Under general supervision, to perform journey-level electrical work; to install, maintain, repair, and alter a variety of indoor building and outdoor electrical systems, machinery and equipment; and to perform related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I

Education and Training:
Completion of an accredited apprenticeship in the electrician's trade,

And

Experience:
The equivalent of two (2) years of full-time journey-level experience as an electrician.

Or II

A combination of education or training in the electronic or electrical trade plus full-time journey-level electrician experience totaling six years.

License:
Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

Special Requirements:

Must be able to safely lift and carry tools and equipment weighing up to 60 pounds.
Must be able and willing to work outside in all types of weather conditions.
Must be able to climb and work from ladders, aerial lifts, and/or scaffolding.
Must be able and willing to work in confined areas.
Must be able to use a respirator.
Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The most suitably qualified candidate will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:

• The standard practices, procedures, methods, tools, materials, equipment, machines and safety requirements used in  the electrical trade.
• Electrical building construction, including planning, layout, blueprint reading and estimating the cost of labor and materials.
• The principles of electricity.
• Safety practices in the electrical field.
• Electronics.
• Computers.

Ability to:

• Plan and install electrical circuits.
• Repair electrical appliances and office equipment.
• Perform electrical work in a safe manner following federal, state, county and departmental safety procedures and requirements.
• Interpret and apply the National Electrical Code and the California Electrical Safety Orders.
• Read and interpret blueprints.
• Keep simple paper and electronic records.
• Use basic computer software, i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

1)  A review of the candidates' application and supplemental questionnaire to verify possession of minimum qualifications.  Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process, the performance examination.
2)  The performance examination  will be weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score.  The performance examination may contain situational exercises.

CANDIDATES MUST ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACH PORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION.
