Introduction

THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year but can be extended.

Supplemental Questionnaire: A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted with each application. Failure to submit the Application or Supplemental Questionnaire will result in disqualification. 

Applications and Supplemental Questionnaires must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing.

DESCRIPTION

THE AGENCY
Alameda County General Services Agency (GSA) delivers a host of logistical support services to County agencies and partners from maintenance of facilities and County fleet to energy and environmental management services, capital project management, procurement services, and clean commute and recycling programs. The GSA Community strives not only to provide these services but to also facilitate collaborative and innovative approaches in its efforts. While the GSA Community largely focuses on support services for Alameda County departments and other public agencies, the work has a direct impact on the communities. GSA builds structures such as libraries and youth centers that transform communities, provides opportunities for local businesses, and works towards ensuring that County work practices minimize negative impacts to the environment. THE POSITION
Under general supervision, the Plumber will perform the work of a journey-level plumber; including installing, maintaining, and repairing gas, steam, plumbing and relaxed fixtures, pipes, and fittings in structures; and to do other related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I
Education and Training:
Completion of a four (4) year apprenticeships in the plumbing trade,

And

Experience:

One (1) year of experience as a journey-level plumber.

Or II

Experience:

Five years of experience as a plumber.

License (required for all of the above patterns)

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

Certificate (required for all of the above patterns):

Possession of a valid Medical Gas Certificate and Backflow Preventer Testing Certificate within 12-months of employment.

Physical Characteristics:

May require heavy lifting, working from a ladder and working in a confined area.


NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The most suitably qualified candidate will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:
  • Theory and operation of all plumbing systems, including medical gas system, equipment, installations and tools.
  • National Plumbing Code.
  • Basic mathematics.
  • Working knowledge of building and safety codes, practices, and procedures related to plumbing.

Ability to:
  • Apply a wide range of technical skills and/or procedures appropriately.
  • Gather and analyze data in order to diagnose and repair problems.
  • Have attention to detail, especially with instructions.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Build strategic work relationships.
  • Have safety awareness and stop work authority related to job duties.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

1)  A review of candidates' applications and supplemental questionnaire to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.

2)  An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises. 

CANDIDATES MUST ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACH PORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION.

*The combined oral examination/hiring interview, in addition to establishing an eligibility list, may serve as the final selection interview for vacancies in this classification.
