THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year but can be extended.
This position requires that all candidates possess and maintain a valid California Motor Vehicle Class A Driver's License, a Tanks (N) endorsement and valid Medical Certificate. Candidates must submit evidence from the DMV showing current status of their license at the time of application dated between opening date and the last day of filing for this recruitment. All Candidates must submit evidence from DMV showing the current status of their driving record and proof of having a clean driving record for the previous 18 months.
Please attach a scanned copy of your current official DMV printout, Tanks (N) endorsement and valid Medical Certificate to your online application under the Resume Tab. Online DMV printouts are not acceptable. The Resume Tab is located at the top of the screen after you have completed this supplemental questionnaire. The RESUME tab can only attach one (1) file. If you have multiple documents, please save all documents in one file and attach it once under the RESUME tab. Please be sure to give your uploaded file a title in the “Description” field. Supplemental Questionnaire: A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted with each application along with DMV printout, Tanks (N) Endorsements, and Medical Certificate. Failure to submit the Application, Supplemental Questionnaire and DMV Printout, Tank Endorsement and Medical Certificate will result in disqualification. Applications and required documents must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing.

Special Requirement:
Federal law and County policy require that positions in the class of Heavy Truck Driver are subject to post-offer/pre-placement/pre-duty, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, random, return-to-duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing.
Working Conditions:
• Heavy Truck Drivers are subject to 24-hour call out and must actively participate in the program.
• Work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Subject to intense heat while applying chipseals, asphalt, crackseats, etc.
• Work on uneven surfaces.
• Subject to loud noises.
• Work in confined spaces.
• Contact with dust, dirt, poisonous plants, dead and live animals, used syringes and condoms, feces, urine, chemicals, paints, petroleum products, etc.
• Work in high traffic areas.
• Subject to climbing ladders, working from heights, working in moving water, bending, stooping, lifting heavy objects, crawling through small spaces, working overhead, etc.
NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.
The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:
Knowledge of:
• CA Biennial Inspection of Terminal (BIT) regulations pertaining to Class A Drivers, Including Hours of Service, Daily Vehicle Inspection reports and Drivers Logs
• Pertinent provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code.
• Basic road maintenance methods, materials and tools.
• Basic preventive maintenance.
• Proper loading and trailering techniques.
• Relevant construction safety procedures.
Ability to:
• Follow oral instructions.
• Follow written instructions.
• Read and write English.
• Drive safely and skillfully.
• Perform relatively heavy manual labor.
• Detect and correct minor mechanical problems.
• Act as lead for a small crew.
