DESCRIPTION

Traffic Sign Worker works under the supervision of the Traffic Safety Supervisor, or equivalent of the Traffic Safety section in the Maintenance and Operations Department of the Public Works Agency. Incumbents are each assigned a truck outfitted with the appropriate power equipment to allow them to work alone. Traffic Sign Workers are distinguished from the supervisor class in that the latter has full supervisory responsibility of the Traffic Safety section, whereas incumbents in the class perform duties as assigned, usually with minimal supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The equivalent of one year as a Laborer in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)
The equivalent of two years of experience in traffic sign fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair work, in accordance with the current State of California Standards or the equivalent.
License: Possession of a valid California Class C Motor Vehicle Operator's license, with no moving violations for the past eighteen (18) months.
Working Conditions:
Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Subject to loud noises.
Work in high traffic areas.
Subject to climbing ladders, working from heights, bending, stooping, lifting heavy objects, working overhead, etc.
NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Knowledge of:
- The State of California Uniform Sign Chart; State and Federal manuals concerning traffic signs.
- The materials and tools used in the erection, removal, repair and emergency fabrication of signs.
- Safety procedures and practices.
Ability to:
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Prepare reports and keep records.
- Read and interpret maintenance, traffic and construction manuals, plans, drawings and specifications.
- Operate light power equipment such as clay spades, jackhammers, drills and impact wrenches used in digging holes and assembling signs.
- Use computer software applications to layout and cut signs.
- Lift and carry objects up to 65 pounds.
- Work efficiently and responsibility under minimal supervision.
- Work, establish and maintain cooperative relationships with the public and other staff.
EXAMINATION COMPONENTS
THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS:
- A review of the applicants’ application to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.
- An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidates’ final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises.
