PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Division, this class is accountable for providing consultative services to all employees and/or employers regarding occupational safety and health.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of an employee of higher grade in the performance of routine tasks; receives closer supervision when performing more advanced tasks.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Conducts basic
occupational safety and health surveys of public employer work sites including
basic evaluations of all types of equipment, construction, and personnel to
ensure compliance with State Occupational Safety and Health Act;
- Interviews managers,
employees, union officials and others to obtain information;
- Uses chemical,
mechanical and electrical principles and procedures to measure, evaluate and
control occupational health hazards;
- Analyzes heat,
illumination, radiation, noise, vibration, vapors and other physical hazards;
- Calibrates technical
instruments;
- Provides technical
assistance to public or private employers as requested;
- Conducts site visits at
occupational health clinics to ensure compliance with state statutes;
- Performs related duties
as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years of experience in occupational safety and health.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
- College training in
occupational safety and health, chemistry, mechanical engineering or a closely
related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of
fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum
of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
- Successful completion of
a Connecticut Careers Trainee program approved by the Department of
Administrative Services may be substituted for the General Experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some risk of injury due to climbing and working with electrical panels and unguarded equipment.
