PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station this class is responsible for performing a full range of highly complex research and related tasks involving very demanding analyses, examinations and innovative, original research.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the limited supervision of a Chief Agricultural Scientist.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead/supervise Agricultural Research Technicians, Agricultural Research Assistants, seasonal assistants and other lower-level employees as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Applies a high order of originality and initiative in research on basic and applied scientific problems;
- Analyzes and interprets results for other scientists and the public;
- Prepares reports for publications and publishes technical reports in peer-reviewed journals;
- Addresses public and professional meetings;
- Responds to citizens’ questions;
- Provides a high level of technical consultation for scientists and the public;
- Must seek grants and extramural funding;
- Performs work with the high ethics, competence and thoroughness of a proven professional;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Considerable achievement in research demonstrated by frequent publication of high quality peer-reviewed research papers of a high order of skill, creativity and originality;
- National recognition as an authority in a field(s) of research;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
- A Master’s degree in an appropriate science AND ten (10) years of professional experience in a scientific research organization; OR
- Ph.D. or equivalent AND six (6) years of professional experience in a scientific research organization.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class will be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
- A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be required to occasionally lift heavy objects, such as standard laboratory equipment and/or trays/boxes or glassware; may be exposed to some risk of injury from such hazards as broken glass, chemicals, and toxic or disease-carrying substances.
