PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station supervises the operation of an experimental farm.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from the Chief of Services or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises lower-level employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Applies principles of experimental research to assist scientists in design, layout and management of field research plots through plowing, harrowing, metered applications of fertilizers and pesticides, planting, timely irrigation and measurements of yield of harvested crops; 
  • Maintains farm buildings, road vehicles, farm tractors and machinery utilizing skills in plumbing, carpentry and electrical and mechanical repairs; 
  • Maintains meticulous records of the location and treatments of all experimental plots to guide site selection in future years; 
  • Maintains pesticide records and implementation of state and federal requirements for an agricultural farm; 
  • Maintains grounds including snow removal and landscaping; 
  • May answer inquiries on soil, water, crops and plant disease and may report results of field experiments orally or in writing; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of the techniques of field research and the ability to apply them through practical knowledge of farming including horticulture, mechanical, carpentry and electrical skills; 
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
  • Ability to
    • identify plants and their pests, and plant stress from lack of nutrients or moisture; 
    • keep accurate records and make written and oral reports; 
    • utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

  • A Bachelor’s degree in agriculture or related field AND two (2) years of appropriate farming or related experience; OR
  • Two (2) years or more of college and four (4) years of appropriate farming or related experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class will be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications including a Commercial Supervisory Certificate for the application of pesticides issued by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may occasionally be required to lift heavy objects, such as standard laboratory equipment and/or trays/boxes of glassware; may be exposed to some risk of injury from such hazards as broken glass, chemicals, and toxic or disease-carrying substances.
