PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Connecticut Airport Authority, Bradley International Airport this class is accountable for directing the Emergency Services Unit engaged in firefighting and fire prevention activities and the provision of response services to medical, crash rescue and other emergency and non-emergency situations.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives administrative direction from an administrative official of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Directs staff and operations of the Emergency Services Unit.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Directs staff and operations of Emergency Services Unit to ensure preparedness of airport to respond to fire, air crash rescue, medical and other emergency response services;
- Coordinates, plans and manages unit activities;
- Formulates program goals and objectives;
- Develops or assists in development of airport policies related to fire and emergency services;
- Interprets and administers pertinent laws;
- Evaluates staff;
- Prepares or assists in preparation of budget recommendations for staff, operating supplies and capital equipment needs;
- Maintains contacts with individuals both within and outside of division who might impact on program activities;
- Ensures Incident Command System policies and procedures implemented appropriately;
- Designs and implements performance review standards for staff;
- Oversees facility inspection and reinspection program to ensure compliance with national and state fire prevention and safety codes;
- Directs preparation of reports on status of operations to ensure compliance with mandated federal and national reporting requirements;
- Ensures coordination of activities with federal, state and local authorities;
- Oversees training and advisory services for other state owned airports;
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Nine (9) years of experience in an organized fire fighting service.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been at the level of an Airport Deputy Fire Chief in charge of several companies at a fire station with direct responsibility for responding to airplane crashes or other fire related emergencies or hazardous situations at an airport handling passenger airlines with the service area covered by the fire station.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a current Motor Vehicle Operator's license with valid endorsements.
- Incumbents in this class will be required to possess and retain Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or EMT - Paramedic certification.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain specific education and/or experience to meet various certification and/or licensing requirements.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
