PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Connecticut Airport Authority this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in coordinating the operational activities at Bradley International Airport on an assigned shift.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of an Airport Operations Specialist or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May exercise operational control of the airport under emergency conditions until relieved by higher authority.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Performs duties in coordinating ongoing airport operations on an assigned shift;
  • Ensures compliance with all federal and state regulations related to safe airport operation;
  • Provides liaison between user airlines, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), fixed base operators (FBO) and all airport tenants and lessees;
  • Performs daily inspections of air operations areas to ensure compliance with established safety and maintenance standards;
  • Observes runway conditions and may issue Notices to Airmen (NOTAMS) to advise airlines, FAA and pilots of current field conditions;
  • Assists in coordinating snow removal operations with maintenance staff;
  • Performs specialized duties as assigned to maintain airport security and operational priorities;
  • May assist in landside and ground transportation operations or terminal building operations;
  • May prepare reports and correspondence;
  • May recommend changes or improvements to operating conditions, systems and procedures where appropriate;
  • May respond to noise complaints;
  • May assist in coordinating the airport noise abatement program;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of fixed base airline or airport operations;
  • Knowledge of
    • state and federal laws, statutes and regulations pertaining to aircraft operations and airport administration;
    • airport administration, airport maintenance and equipment and office management;
    • meteorology;

  • Ability to utilize computer software;
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Six (6) years of experience in the aeronautical operations activities of an airport or a scheduled airline.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have involved responsibility for the implementation of airport policies and procedures relating directly to Airside Operations and Airport Certification.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • College training in aviation management or a closely related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
  • A Master's degree in aviation management or a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to moderately disagreeable conditions on occasion such as weather conditions and loud noise.
