In a state agency this class is accountable for performing engineering and/or related duties in the design, location, construction, improvement and maintenance of state projects.
Works under the general supervision of an engineer or other employee of higher grade in the performance of routine tasks; receives closer supervision when performing more advanced tasks.
May lead lower level employees as assigned.
Performs a limited range of related duties and is assigned in one or more of the following functional areas:
INVESTIGATION AND SURVEY:
- Surveys an area to develop maps and other engineering data relative to the use of the area;
- Carries out investigations to determine adequacy, condition and safety of engineering projects;
- Participates in public hearings;
- Prepares reports;
- Performs related duties as required.
CONSTRUCTION, IMPROVEMENT AND MAINTENANCE:
- Lays out limits of work;
- Assures that contractor carries out work in accordance with plans and specifications;
- Inspects engineering projects for conformance with accepted engineering standards;
- Notes unforeseen conditions;
- Recommends specific changes on original plans, specifications or design;
- Prepares daily reports;
- Performs related duties as required.
PLANNING AND DESIGN:
- Determines requirements, location and layout of facilities such as bridges, highways, airports, buildings (site, foundations, walls and structural members), erosion protection systems, sewage plants, soil structures (banks, dams and slopes), water systems and power plants exclusive of electrical and mechanical features;
- Prepares reports;
- Performs related duties as required.
SPECIAL ENGINEERING INVESTIGATIONS:
- Analyzes, develops and evaluates criteria, methodology, equipment utilized and data developed;
- Prepares reports;
- Performs related duties as required.
Five (5) years of experience in civil engineering.
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some risk of injury or physical harm from highway or construction environments and a moderate degree of discomfort from year-round weather conditions.
