PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

At the University of Connecticut and University of Connecticut Health Center this class is accountable for receiving on-the-job training in caring for various species of laboratory animals and related duties.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the close supervision of an employee of higher grade.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Receives training to perform tasks of feeding and watering animals, cleaning and sanitizing cages, animal rooms and related environment as necessary; 
  • Receives training in performing physical examinations and laboratory tests and special handling techniques for researchers as required, and identifying animals as to sex, species or strain; 
  • Collects animal facilities operation data for accurate reports and required records; 
  • May breed and wean animals; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Ability to
    • follow oral and written instructions; 
    • utilize computer software;
  • Manual dexterity and physical ability sufficient for handling animals, feeds, supplies and equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy objects and may be exposed to communicable diseases, hazardous substances and to risk of injury from animals.

APPOINTMENT

This class is intended to permit agencies to recruit and train employees for the class of Animal Care Technician. An employee may be appointed to this class for a period not to exceed two (2) years. No exceptions or extensions beyond the two (2) years will be granted.

COMPENSATION GUIDELINES

In accordance with applicable collective bargaining agreement's compensation guidelines.
