PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

At UConn Health, Center for Comparative Medicine this class is accountable for supervising a team engaged in the delivery of husbandry services.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from the Assistant Director of the Center for Comparative Medicine or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises Animal Care Technicians, laboratory personnel of lower grade and other staff as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work of staff; 
  • Provides staff training and assistance; 
  • Conducts performance evaluations; 
  • Determines priorities and plans laboratory work flow; 
  • Assists in the establishment, implementation and maintenance of laboratory procedures; 
  • Makes recommendations on the development of laboratory policies and standards; 
  • Acts as a liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; 
  • Ensures unit operations are in compliance with federal, state and regulatory agency guidelines and regulations; 
  • Oversees general care of laboratory animals and maintains compliance with animal care regulations; 
  • Maintains animal, supply and personnel records; 
  • Prepares reports and correspondence; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • and ability to interpret industry requirements as specified in the federal, state and regulatory agency guidelines; 
    • laboratory animal science and research protocols regarding the use and care of animals; 
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
  • Ability to
    • interact and work cooperatively with various levels of staff and vendors; 
    • independently plan and complete laboratory animal husbandry and technical procedures; 
    • utilize computer software; 
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in animal care services in a laboratory animal care and/or academic setting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must be at the level of an Animal Care Technician.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in a related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must possess certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician by the Certification and Registry Board of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.
  • Incumbents in this class must possess and retain registration as a Laboratory Animal Technician by the Certification and Registry Board of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to communicable diseases, hazardous substances and to risk of injury from animals.
