PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Division of Criminal Justice this class is accountable for performing the most complex tasks in providing promotional, informational and educational programs and for assisting in the agency's legislative activities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of an employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead professional and clerical staff as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Performs the most complex duties in the area of promotional, informational and educational services;
- Designs, develops and maintains communications through a variety of media, including the web;
- Coordinates communication workflow;
- Assists in the development of the agency's legislative package;
- Reviews statutes, legislation and regulations affecting the agency;
- Monitors bills introduced in the legislature for their effect on the operations of the agency;
- Follows progress of bills and keeps agency officials informed on developments in legislation;
- Establishes and maintains communications procedures;
- In consultation with agency officials, develops and implements promotional, informational and educational programs for staff and the public;
- Develops and prepares promotional and informational material such as news releases, pamphlets, brochures, exhibits, bulletins and agency publications;
- Acts as an official contact and source of information regarding agency functions and procedures;
- Responds to inquiries from media, the Governor's office, public and other state agencies;
- Speaks before groups on agency related topics;
- Prepares speeches and written materials for department officials;
- Conducts research and communications;
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Seven (7) years of professional experience in communications, public information, public relations or the preparation, analysis and research of legislation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
- College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
- A Master's degree in communications or a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.
