PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Aging and Disability Services this class is accountable for administering the programs and operations of a vocational rehabilitation services bureau.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives executive direction from the Commissioner.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Administers programs and operations of a bureau; directs all staff.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Administers staff and operations and plans activities of the vocational rehabilitation services bureau including vocational rehabilitation, disability determination and independent living services;
- Provides daily supervision of various programs and services offered by the State to people with disabilities;
- Acts as consultant with respect to these programs and services;
- Coordinates programs and services to insure compliance with state and federal policy;
- Serves in a liaison capacity between department and appropriate federal agencies and other state agencies;
- Prepares and/or assists in preparation of bureau budget and administers bureau budget;
- Works to coordinate vocational rehabilitation programs and services across the State with state and local school authorities, community-based organizations, advisory councils and consumer groups;
- Advises the Commissioner on significant issues, program developments and operations of rehabilitation services programs;
- Represents the Commissioner on task forces, advisory boards and negotiating teams;
- Leads the recruitment and hiring of staff, including outreach, interview and selection;
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
A Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling or a related field and a minimum of eight (8) years of professional experience in the field of vocational rehabilitation, public administration or a related human services area.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
An equivalent combination of education and professional experience as determined by the Commissioner.
