At the University of Connecticut Health Center, Central Sterile Processing and Distribution Department this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor responsible for the sterilization, decontamination, processing, assembly, storing and distribution of medical instruments, supplies, devices and equipment.

• Plans unit workflow and determines priorities; 
• Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work; 
• Establishes and maintains unit procedures; 
• Provides staff training and assistance; 
• Conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations; 
• Acts as liaison with operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; 
• Responsible for proper packing, sterilization and dissemination of hospital instruments to other departments to meet patient care needs; 
• Replaces or recommends solutions to various equipment issues within the unit; 
• Maintains sterilization records and controls; 
• Performs preventive maintenance on complex mechanical equipment; 
• May make recommendations on policies or standards; 
• May prepare reports and correspondence; 
• Performs related duties as required.

Four (4) years of experience in a hospital setting involved in the sterilization, decontamination, processing and distribution of medical instruments, supplies, devices and equipment.

• Incumbents in this class must have been employed or otherwise contracted for services as a central service technician in a health care facility before January 1, 2016 or obtain and maintain one of the following:
  • a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) credential administered by the International Association of Healthcare Central Services Material Management; OR
  • a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) credential administered by the Certified Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc.
  • NOTE: Credentialing must be obtained no later than two (2) years after date of appointment to the Assistant Supervisor of Central Sterile Processing and Distribution classification.
• Incumbents in this class must complete a minimum of ten (10) hours of continuing education annually. The continuing education shall be in areas related to the functions of central service technician.

Incumbents in this class may occasionally be required to lift and carry trays of surgical instruments and linen, may have some exposure to communicable and/or infectious diseases and may be exposed to moderately disagreeable conditions.
