PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for performing less complicated detail work and assisting in the review of engineering design plans and specifications.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of a Design Engineer or other employee of higher grade; receives closer supervision when performing more advanced tasks.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead lower level employees as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Performs a limited range of related duties;
- Assists in preparation of analyses and designs of buildings and other types of engineering projects;
- Prepares plans and specifications under direction of a Design Engineer or other employee of higher grade;
- Checks shop drawings;
- Reviews plans prepared by outside engineers;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Knowledge of
- principles and practices of engineering design in parenthetical field;
- engineering aspects of building construction including materials;
- Ability to
- engineer the design of large buildings;
- utilize computer software.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years of experience in the structural engineering field including one (1) year in structural engineering design.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
- College training in the structural engineering field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
- Successful completion of an Engineer Trainee program approved by the Department of Administrative Services may be substituted for the General Experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury or physical harm from construction site environments and a moderate degree of discomfort from year-round weather conditions.
COMPENSATION GUIDELINES
- The classification of Design Engineer 1 is assigned to Salary Group LS 19a.
- Employees shall proceed through that salary group and then shall proceed to the maximum salary of Salary Group LS 20.
- The Job Code is identified as Salary Plan IE in CORE-CT.
