PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
This class is accountable for assisting in the supervision of employees engaged in the various aspects of the systematic transportation of goods and/or people.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives general direction from the Supervisor of Transportation Operations or other employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Assists with the supervision of Maintainers, Qualified Craft Workers, University Drivers and other employees as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Assists in scheduling, assigning, overseeing and reviewing the work of staff;
- Assists in providing staff training and assistance;
- Assists in conducting performance evaluations;
- Assists in determining priorities and planning unit work;
- Assists in establishing and maintaining unit procedures;
- Assists in developing or making recommendations on the development of policies and standards;
- Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures;
- Assists in the establishment of daily and periodic routes for the transportation of goods and/or people;
- Assists in maintaining an inventory of equipment and supplies;
- Assists in the maintenance of assigned vehicles;
- Assists in the supervision of snow removal operations;
- May assist in the estimation of costs of transportation and budget projections;
- May drive routes on an as needed basis;
- May act for supervisor in their absence;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Knowledge of
- methods and equipment utilized to transport goods and people;
- methods of repair of automotive equipment;

- perform mechanical repairs;
- maintain records such as personnel records, inventories of supplies, maintenance schedules, route schedules, etc.;
- operate assigned motor equipment;
- establish a budget and maintain a running balance of funds expended;
- utilize computer software;
- Supervisory ability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years of experience in the operation and/or maintenance of fleet vehicles.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license and a Connecticut Public Service Vehicle Operator's license with a Public Passenger Endorsement.
- Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications including possession of a license for the repair of radio equipment at time of appointment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
- A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents may be required to lift; may be exposed to hazardous road conditions.
