PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Veterans' Affairs this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor for Veterans' Residential Facility Workers engaged in the implementation of on-going behavioral support programs and rehabilitative interventions designed to support short and/or long term needs.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives general direction from the Director of Residential Programs and Services or other employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Leads Veterans' Residential Facility Workers, veteran workers, volunteers and other staff as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Leads and advises Veterans' Residential Facility Workers in assisting veterans with the activities of daily living;
- Functions as a member of a case management team and participates in implementation of behavioral support programs and rehabilitative interventions;
- Assists veterans in developing effective strategies for managing internal and external stress;
- Ensures a safe and healthy living environment;
- Participates in planning rehabilitation activities and programs for veterans;
- Leads social and recreational functions;
- Communicates and interacts with veterans on problems with daily living and refers them for professional help where appropriate;
- Investigates, acts on and notifies medical or protective service staff of problems;
- Prepares and submits work orders for repair of facilities and requisitions for veteran needs;
- Ensures and participates in completion of required records and reports;
- Plans workflow and determines priorities;
- Ensures unit procedures are maintained;
- Provides staff training and assistance;
- Assists in conducting performance evaluations;
- Acts as liaison with operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures;
- May make recommendations on policies or standards;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

- principles and practices related to the care of individuals living in a residential facility;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of experience in the physical and behavioral care and needs of residents living in a health care facility or working with veterans in the community.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of the General Experience must have been as a Veterans' Residential Facility Worker.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training in a behavioral science, social work, rehabilitation therapy or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of one (1) year.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must possess physical and emotional health for efficient performance of duties; a physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be required to lift or restrain residents; may be exposed to communicable and/or infectious diseases and risk of injury from assaultive residents.
