PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station this class is responsible for performing a range of highly complex research tasks involving very demanding analyses, examinations and original research.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the limited supervision of a Chief Agricultural Scientist.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead/supervise Agricultural Research Technicians, Agricultural Research Assistants, seasonal assistants and other lower-level employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Applies originality and initiative in analysis or research on basic and applied scientific problems; 
  • Analyzes and interprets results for other scientists and the general public; 
  • Writes articles and reports for peer-reviewed journals; 
  • Addresses public meetings and responds to citizens’ questions; 
  • Must seek grants and extramural funding; 
  • Performs work with the high ethics, competence and thoroughness of a proven professional; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • research standards, principles and practices; 
    • scientific techniques such as: analytical procedures, insect identifications, diagnosis of plant diseases, statistics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, or plant identification; 
  • Knowledge of physical and data resources in the applicable scientific field(s); 
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
  • Ability to
    • organize, evaluate, interpret, document and report scientific data; 
    • analyze research problems and develop meaningful solutions; 
    • utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

  • A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate science AND ten (10) years of professional experience in a scientific research organization; OR
  • A Master’s degree in an appropriate science AND seven (7) years of professional experience in a scientific research organization; OR
  • A Ph.D. or equivalent AND three (3) years of professional experience in a scientific research organization.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class will be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to occasionally lift heavy objects, such as standard laboratory equipment and/or trays/boxes of glassware; may be exposed to some risk of injury from such hazards as broken glass, chemicals, and toxic or disease-carrying substances.
