PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Division of Criminal Justice this class is accountable for representing the interests of the state in the most complex juvenile proceedings; may supervise office operations.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the limited supervision of a State's Attorney, Supervisory Assistant State's Attorney or employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May supervise staff as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- In Juvenile Matters, prepares and presents all matters to the court at one or more Juvenile Matters locations;
- Reviews police referrals and complaints for legal sufficiency relative to alleged delinquent acts;
- Drafts charge for delinquencies and Family With Service Needs petitions;
- Confers with juvenile probation staff with regard to procedural matters, case processing, and the enforcement of court orders;
- Supervises the preparation of delinquent petitions;
- Conducts pre-trial interviews with alleged offenders and defense counsel;
- Prepares cases for judicial processing;
- Locates and interviews victims and witnesses;
- Advises victims of crimes as to their rights and directs them to appropriate supportive agencies;
- Secures evidence and inspects appropriate supportive agencies;
- Secures evidence and inspects crime scenes;
- Initiates and conducts legal research;
- Presents cases in court before a judge;
- Represents the state in motion hearings, plea hearings, and disposition hearings in juvenile matters;
- Reviews warrants in juvenile matters and presents to judge for signature;
- Maintains liaison with and functions as a resource to state and local police agencies;
- Represents the state in juvenile proceedings;
- Participates in training programs for law enforcement professionals;
- Presents juvenile matters for transfer to the adult criminal court;
- Prepares and argues appeals before the Appellate or Supreme Court;
- Prepares reports and correspondence;
- May supervise the office operations;
- May schedule, assign, oversee, and review the work of staff;
- May provide staff training and assistance;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Considerable knowledge of
- criminal law and legal process, legal principles and practice;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Membership in good standing with the Connecticut Bar.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents may be required to travel in the course of their daily work.
