PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Chaplaincy Department of a state hospital, facility or agency, this class is accountable for supervising comprehensive clinical pastoral care and clinical pastoral training programs.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from the Assistant Superintendent, Mental Health Chief of Professional Services or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises Associate Chaplains, Chaplains, volunteers and other staff as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews the work of staff; 
  • Provides staff training and assistance; 
  • Conducts performance evaluations; 
  • Determines priorities and plans department work; 
  • Establishes and maintains department procedures; 
  • Develops or make recommendations on development of policies and standards; 
  • Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding department policies and procedures; 
  • Prepares reports and correspondence; 
  • Coordinates interfaith activities of agency; 
  • Organizes volunteer outreach programs; 
  • Conducts services; 
  • Provides crisis intervention counseling; 
  • May serve as case coordinator, team director or primary therapist; 
  • May serve on a variety of in-house committees such as quality assurance committee; 
  • May direct Employees Assistance Program for facility; 
  • May participate in or direct staff meetings for development of therapeutic or in-house programs; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of pastoral ministry and ability to perform requirements of formal religious services; 
  • Knowledge of and ability to relate medical, psychiatric, educational and social service techniques to clinical pastoral care and training; 
  • Considerable
    • pastoral care and counseling skills; 
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

  • Incumbents must possess one of the following:
    • Graduation from an accredited three (3) year post graduate theological seminary;
    • A Master of Divinity degree or its equivalent;
    • Eligible for Professional Board Certification by a national accrediting agency.

AND

  • Four (4) years of pastoral experience or equivalent experience within a recognized religious denomination.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in clinical work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have been ordained or commissioned by a religious body and received endorsement by an acceptable recognized denominational authority for this position. Endorsement or credentialing by the same endorsing authority must be ongoing and uninterrupted as a condition of employment.
  • Incumbents in this class must have four (4) units of clinical training in a program accredited by a national accrediting agency.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and maintain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain clients or inmates; may have some exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive/abusive clients or inmates; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
