PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station this class is accountable for overseeing the activities of and assuming the responsibilities for a Department at the Station.
GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE
Incumbents in this class are responsible for the following duties:
- Stimulating research in a field of agricultural science.
- Administering regulatory laws as required by state statutes.
- Conducting extremely complex analyses, examinations or highly original research.
- Designating research problems, leading and evaluating the research of scientists within a group.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives administrative direction from the Director, Agricultural Experiment Station.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Assigns technicians, Research Assistants, seasonal assistants and other staff.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Directs staff and operational activities in a Department at the Station and advises the Director directly or through Station Council;
- Maintains liaison with state and federal officers and citizens as required by the mission of the Station;
- Brings to bear unusual distinction and insight in pursuit of research on basic and applied scientific problems;
- Accurately analyzes, interprets and conveys results to scientists and the general public;
- Writes papers and articles for peer-reviewed journals;
- Aids colleagues in preparing reports;
- Selects and trains scientists, technicians and office workers;
- Addresses meetings of and answers questions from citizens of the state;
- Seeks grants and extramural funding;
- Develops, applies and monitors a departmental grant and extramural funding program;
- Performs work with the high ethics, competence and thoroughness of a proven professional;
- Participates in the recruitment and hiring of staff, including outreach, interview and selection;
- May temporarily assume responsibilities for the Station in absence of the Director and Vice Director;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Administrative abilities in dealing with scientists and the general public;
- Outstanding achievement in research or service as demonstrated by a substantial number of peer-reviewed publications that show a high order of skill, creativity and originality;
- A nationally recognized authority in a field of science;
- Possesses superior knowledge in great demand by the general public;
- Serves as a resource for members of several departments by providing advice and experimental expertise to help solve important problems;
- May be required to interact frequently with stakeholders.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
A Ph.D. or equivalent and ten (10) years of experience in significant and productive research or analysis and its management.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must possess a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Incumbents in this class may occasionally be required to lift heavy objects such as standard laboratory equipment and/or trays/boxes of glassware,
- Incumbents in this class may occasionally be exposed to some risk of injury from hazards such as broken glass, chemicals and toxic or disease-carrying substances.
