PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station this class is responsible for performing field and laboratory support tasks for assigned basic and applied research projects.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the supervision of scientist or other employee of higher grade in the performance of more routine tasks. Receives closer supervision when operating advanced equipment, making routine analytical judgments, and performing more complex tasks.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead lower-level employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

IN THE FIELD
  • Works independently, identifies, collects or counts organisms and materials; 
  • Accurately performs complex experiments; 
  • Follows plans from a scientist; 
  • Performs related duties as required.
IN THE LABORATORY
  • Prepares apparatus; 
  • Operates equipment; 
  • Analyzes samples physically or chemically; 
  • Follows published methods or plans prepared by a scientist; 
  • Notes unusual outcomes; 
  • Prepares numerical summaries, performs statistical or other mathematical analyses;
  • Prepares written reports, drawings tables and graphs; 
  • May read, classify, summarize and manage scientific literature, documents or books; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
    • scientific terminology and notation; 
    • and ability to operate a wide range of scientific equipment; 
  • Ability to
    • read, interpret, and apply instructions accurately; 
    • record observations precisely; 
    • make judgments;
    • perform advanced calculations; 
    • utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

  • High School graduation or possession of General Educational Development (GED) certification with courses in the sciences AND six (6) years of experience at the level of Agricultural Research Assistant 2 or 3; OR
  • Two (2) years of college training in an appropriate science and three (3) years of experience at the level of Agricultural Research Assistant 2 or 3; OR
  • A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate science.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class will be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to occasionally lift heavy objects, such as standard laboratory equipment and/or trays/boxes of glassware; may be exposed to some risk of injury from such hazards as broken glass, chemicals, and toxic or disease-carrying substances.
