PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station this class is responsible for independently performing a full range of field and laboratory support tasks for basic and applied scientific research projects.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of a scientist or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead lower-level employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

IN THE FIELD
  • Identifies, collects and/or counts organisms and materials; 
  • Performs experiments, follows plans drawn by a scientist; 
  • Performs related duties as required.
IN THE LABORATORY
  • Sets up apparatus; 
  • Operates equipment; 
  • Analyzes samples physically or chemically; 
  • Follows published methods with consultative guidance from a scientist; 
  • Provides input and discusses design of experiment and methods with a scientist; 
  • Conducts tests; 
  • Notes and reports unusual results; 
  • Prepares numerical summaries, written reports, drawings, tables and graphs; 
  • Interprets statistical results; 
  • May read, classify, summarize and manage scientific literature, documents or books; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
    • scientific terminology and notation; 
    • and ability to operate scientific equipment; 
  • Ability to
    • read, interpret, and apply instructions accurately; 
    • record observations precisely and to perform complex statistical or other mathematical analyses; 
    • utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

  • A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate science AND three (3) years of experience in related scientific activities; OR
  • A Master’s degree in an appropriate science.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class will be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to occasionally lift heavy objects, such as standard laboratory equipment and/or trays/boxes of glassware; may be exposed to some risk of injury from such hazards as broken glass, chemicals, and toxic or disease-carrying substances.
