PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station this class is responsible for independently performing a full range of complex research and related tasks involving demanding analyses, examinations, or original research.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of a Chief Agricultural Scientist.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead/supervise Agricultural Research Technicians, Agricultural Research Assistants, seasonal assistants and other lower-level employees as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Applies a qualified level of originality and initiative in analysis and research on less complex, basic and applied scientific problems;
- Studies, evaluates and interprets results orally and in written reports for scientists and the public;
- Addresses meetings and responds to questions from the public;
- Trains technicians/other support staff;
- Writes articles for technical and practical publications including peer-reviewed journals;
- Must seek grants and extramural funding;
- Performs work with the high ethics, competence and thoroughness of a proven professional;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Knowledge of
- research standards, principles and practices;
- scientific techniques such as: analytical procedures, insect identification, diagnosis of plant diseases, experimental design, mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, or plant identification;
- physical and data resources in the applicable scientific field(s);

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
- A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate science AND seven (7) years of professional experience in a scientific research or related organization; OR
- A Master’s degree in an appropriate science AND four (4) years of professional experience in a scientific research or related organization; OR
- A Ph.D. or equivalent in an appropriate science.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class will be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
- A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be required to occasionally lift heavy objects, such as standard laboratory equipment and/or trays/boxes of glassware; may be exposed to some risk of injury from such hazards as broken glass, chemicals and toxic or disease-carrying substances.
