PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Public Health this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the evaluation and monitoring of funeral and embalming practices.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of an employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead lower level employees as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Performs reviews of funeral homes and crematories for compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations;
- Interprets federal and state regulations regarding facilities;
- Interviews witnesses, complainants, and others to obtain information;
- Secures evidence in the form of statements, documents, records and exhibits which may be used in administrative hearings and/or court proceedings;
- Collects and evaluates data;
- Compiles information;
- Prepares reports on facilities for compliance with pertinent federal and state laws and regulations and communicates results;
- Maintains records of compliance reviews and subsequent recommendations;
- Recommends corrective action as needed;
- Provides consultation to licensed facilities and to unlicensed facilities to bring them into compliance with laws and regulations;
- Assesses outstanding corrective actions and follow-up items;
- Answers public inquiries;
- May participate in administrative and legal proceedings;
- May conduct surveillance;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Considerable knowledge of the funeral industry;
- Knowledge of

- and ability to interpret and apply relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Three (3) years of experience as a licensed embalmer.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must possess and retain an Embalmer Licensure in Connecticut.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
- Incumbents in this class are required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
