PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Office of the State Comptroller, serves as a board member acting on behalf of the State Employees Retirement Commission to determine whether each applicant for disability retirement is entitled to such retirement.
GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE
In accordance with the provisions of Sections 5-169c and 7-432 of the Connecticut General Statutes the board shall consist of a total of up to twenty-five (25) physicians. The board shall include at least one (1) physician within the following specialties:
Psychiatry,
Occupational Therapy,
Pulmonology,
Orthopedics,
Neurology,
and Cardiology.
One (1) physician shall serve as the elected chairman or elected secretary of the board and shall serve with two members to constitute a quorum for the determination of any applicant’s entitlement.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the limited direction of the Retirement Commission through the Office of the State Comptroller.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Investigates statements and certificates submitted by or on behalf of a claimant in connection with any application for disability retirement;
- Evaluates and interprets medical/psychological evidence related to claim;
- Requests and approves stenographic and professional consultative services as necessary;
- Responsible for medical signatory in claims where a physician’s/psychologist’s signature is required;
- Upon conclusion of board’s examination and investigation prepares and submits report of findings and proceedings;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Knowledge of
- methods and principles of medicine and surgery;
- current principles and methods of assessment and treatment of patients with medical illness, mental illness and substance abuse disorders;
- recent developments in medical field;
- Skills
- interpersonal skills;
- oral and written communication skills;
- Ability to analyze and interpret laboratory reports, x-ray reports, and other medical reports and findings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Possession of a degree from an accredited medical school and board eligible or board certified.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a license, in good standing, to practice medicine and surgery in Connecticut.
APPOINTMENT
- Designated by the Trustees of the Connecticut State Employees Retirement Commission and serves at the pleasure thereof.
- No permanent State Employee may work in a per diem position.
- Permanent status cannot be obtained by working in this classification.
SALARY
- Compensation will be $195.00 per hour for physicians in a specialty other than psychiatry.
- Compensation will be $225.00 per hour for psychiatrists.
