PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor for Telephone Operators engaged in the operation of a private branch exchange (PBX) telephone switchboard, desk console or other electronic telephone systems.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives general direction from an employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Leads Telephone Operators and other staff as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Plans office workflow;
- Determines priorities, schedules, assigns, and reviews work;
- Establishes and maintains office procedures;
- Provides staff training and assistance;
- Conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations;
- Prepare and maintains office records;
- Acts as liaison with operating units, agencies, and outside officials regarding agency policies and procedures;
- Prepares reports and correspondence;
- Performs clerical duties;
- May staff communications center for agency;
- May make recommendations on policies or standards;
- May supervise mailroom;
- Performs the full range of duties as outlined in the Telephone Operator specification;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Considerable knowledge of the operation of a PBX telephone switchboard, desk console or other electronic telephone systems;
- Knowledge of clerical procedures;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of experience in clerical work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in the operation of electronic telephone systems or as a PBX or telephone company operator.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Persons having responsibility for supervising or observing the behavior of inmates or custodial clients will be required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification at the time of appointment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents may be required to work in tiring positions performing repetitious and monotonous tasks for extended periods of time.
